The Bar Standards Board (BSB) regulates barristers: the specialist advocates who represent clients in court. It decides who may practise as a barrister and sets the standards they must keep.
History
The BSB was set up in 2006 to take over regulation from the Bar Council, which continues to represent barristers, so that the profession would no longer regulate itself.
Role
In UKOGB a member must pass the BSB's test, on the law and on the rules of conduct, before they can practise as a barrister and represent clients in the courts of HM Courts and Tribunals Service. Barristers who pass get the Barrister role in the Discord server. The BSB can also discipline barristers who break its rules.
Positions
In UKOGB the Bar Standards Board is run by members who hold its posts on the website. Its head is the Chair of the Bar Standards Board, who can edit the organisation's page, appoint people to its other roles and speak for it in public. The current holders are shown in the box on this page and on the organisation's page on the website, and each post brings its own Discord roles and website permissions.
