The order
The Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George was founded in 1818 by the Prince Regent, later King George IV. It honours service abroad and in foreign affairs, and is given above all to diplomats. It has three classes, Knight or Dame Grand Cross (GCMG), Knight or Dame Commander (KCMG or DCMG) and Companion (CMG). Its chapel is in St Paul's Cathedral, and its motto is "Auspicium melioris aevi" (Token of a better age).
Appointment
Honours are awarded by The Sovereign, usually on the advice of the Prime Minister. In UKOGB any member can nominate another for an honour on the website, with a citation explaining why. Once it is awarded, the honour and the date it was given appear on the holder's profile, and their styled name changes to include it.
