History

The department was formed in 2023, bringing together the work of the former trade and business departments.

Role

The DBT supports companies to start and grow, negotiates trade deals with other countries, and sets the rules on how businesses are run and how workers are treated. In UKOGB it runs Companies House at companieshouse.ukogb.co.uk: anyone who wants to start a company applies there, and the Business Secretary and the Registrar review the application before the company is incorporated.

Positions

In UKOGB the Department for Business and Trade is run by members who hold its posts on the website. Its head is the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, who can edit the organisation's page, appoint people to its other roles and speak for it in public. The current holders are shown in the box on this page and on the organisation's page on the website, and each post brings its own Discord roles and website permissions.
