History

Government first took on a role in schooling in the nineteenth century, and the department has had many names since. It took its present name in 2010.

Role

The DfE funds schools and colleges, sets the national curriculum and the rules for exams and qualifications, oversees teacher training and pay, and is responsible for student finance and children's social care.

Positions

In UKOGB the Department for Education is run by members who hold its posts on the website. Its head is the Secretary of State for Education, who can edit the organisation's page, appoint people to its other roles and speak for it in public. The current holders are shown in the box on this page and on the organisation's page on the website, and each post brings its own Discord roles and website permissions.
