History

The Electoral Commission was set up in 2000 to oversee elections and party funding independently of the government of the day.

Elections

The Commission opens general elections and by-elections, takes candidates' applications for each seat, runs the voting and declares the results. Elections are held on the website at elections.ukogb.co.uk and votes are cast at vote.ukogb.co.uk. When a seat falls vacant between elections, for example because its MP resigns or leaves the community, the Commission calls a by-election.

Forming a government

After a general election the leader of the largest party is asked to form a government. Where the rules require a majority and no party has one, the Commission oversees the talks between party leaders to form a coalition, and can allow a minority government if they fail.

Parties and donations

The Commission keeps the register of political parties and the list of constituencies, and publishes the register of donations to parties, so voters can see who funds them. Party leadership elections are also run under its rules.

Positions

In UKOGB the Electoral Commission is run by members who hold its posts on the website. Its head is the Electoral Commissioner, who can edit the organisation's page, appoint people to its other roles and speak for it in public. The current holders are shown in the box on this page and on the organisation's page on the website, and each post brings its own Discord roles and website permissions.
