His Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is the government department that collects taxes. It takes income tax from salaries, charges investment tax on gains and income from investments, and collects stamp duty on share purchases, all at the rates set by HM Treasury in the Budget. It is led by its Chief Executive.

History

HMRC was formed in 2005 by joining the Inland Revenue, which collected income tax, with HM Customs and Excise, which collected duties on goods.

Role

In UKOGB, income tax is taken from every member's daily salary before it is paid, at the rates and thresholds in the Budget. Investment tax is charged on gains from selling shares and funds and on income from investments, and stamp duty is charged each time shares are bought on the London Stock Exchange. Accounts held in tax-free wrappers such as ISAs are exempt. HMRC publishes notices about tax in its own channel.

Positions

In UKOGB HM Revenue and Customs is run by members who hold its posts on the website. Its head is the Chief Executive of HMRC, who can edit the organisation's page, appoint people to its other roles and speak for it in public. The current holders are shown in the box on this page and on the organisation's page on the website, and each post brings its own Discord roles and website permissions.
