The order
The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle was Scotland's highest order of chivalry, founded by King James VII and II in 1687. It is limited to the Sovereign and sixteen Knights or Ladies, appointed as the Sovereign's personal gift, and its chapel is in St Giles' Cathedral, Edinburgh. Its motto is "Nemo me impune lacessit" (No one provokes me with impunity).
Appointment
Honours are awarded by The Sovereign, usually on the advice of the Prime Minister. In UKOGB any member can nominate another for an honour on the website, with a citation explaining why. Once it is awarded, the honour and the date it was given appear on the holder's profile, and their styled name changes to include it.
