The Charity Commission registers and regulates charities. It keeps the public register of charities, checks that they are run properly and for their stated purposes, and can step in when a charity is mismanaged.
History
The Charity Commission was established in 1853 to oversee the many charitable trusts that had grown up over the centuries, some of which had been neglected or abused.
Role
In UKOGB anyone can apply to register a charity on the website. The Commission reviews each application, keeps the register at ukogb.co.uk/charities, and publishes its notices in its own channel. Political parties' donations are reported separately to the Electoral Commission.
