Cities of London and Westminster is a constituency represented in the House of Commons. It covers the City of London, the country's financial centre, and the heart of Westminster, including the Palace of Westminster, Whitehall, Downing Street and Buckingham Palace.
Since 8 June 2017 it has been represented by Sir Oliver Howard of the Labour Party, who has been Prime Minister since 2022.
History
For most of its history the seat was regarded as one of the safest in the country for the Conservatives, being the home of the banks and of the Palace. When Howard was selected as Labour's candidate in 2017, commentators said that a Labour lawyer from Sheffield could not win it. He argued that the City should back the industries that made things, pointing to his own bank, Hopkins PLC, which only lends to firms that make things, and he took the seat by 1,412 votes at the 2017 election. He has held it since, with a larger majority at the 2022 general election.
