10 Downing Street, known as Number 10, is the official residence and office of the Prime Minister. Its black front door, facing a short street off Whitehall in London, is one of the best-known images of British government, and announcements from the Prime Minister and the Prime Minister's office are made in its name.

History

The house was offered to Sir Robert Walpole, usually counted as the first Prime Minister, in 1732, and he accepted it as the home of the First Lord of the Treasury rather than as a personal gift. It has been the Prime Minister's home and office ever since. Behind its modest front, Number 10 is a large building of around a hundred rooms, joined to Number 11, the home of the Chancellor of the Exchequer, and to the Cabinet Office behind.

Role

Number 10 is where the Prime Minister works, meets ministers and visitors, and where the Cabinet meets in the Cabinet Room. The Prime Minister's staff there handle the government's communications and policy, and speak for the Prime Minister.

In UKOGB, Number 10 posts the Prime Minister's announcements on the website and in its own Discord channel. Sir Oliver Howard has lived "above the shop" at Number 10 since 2022.

Positions

In UKOGB 10 Downing Street is run by members who hold its posts on the website. Its head is the Prime Minister, who can edit the organisation's page, appoint people to its other roles and speak for it in public. The current holders are shown in the box on this page and on the organisation's page on the website, and each post brings its own Discord roles and website permissions.
