The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) is the public prosecutor of UKOGB. It decides whether people investigated by the Police Service should be charged with a crime, and prosecutes criminal cases in the courts of HM Courts and Tribunals Service. It is led by the Director of Public Prosecutions.
History
The CPS was set up in 1986, taking over prosecutions from the police so that the decision to charge someone would be made independently of those who investigated them.
Role
A prosecutor charges a suspect only if there is enough evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction and a prosecution is in the public interest. Once a charge is brought, the CPS prepares the case and presents it in court. Its charging decisions are published in its own channel.
Positions
In UKOGB the Crown Prosecution Service is run by members who hold its posts on the website. Its head is the Director of Public Prosecutions, who can edit the organisation's page, appoint people to its other roles and speak for it in public. The current holders are shown in the box on this page and on the organisation's page on the website, and each post brings its own Discord roles and website permissions.
