The Police Service keeps the peace in UKOGB. Its officers respond to crimes, investigate them, arrest suspects and pass their files to the Crown Prosecution Service for a charging decision. It is led by the Commissioner of Police.
History
Modern policing in Britain began in 1829, when Sir Robert Peel founded the Metropolitan Police. His principle, that "the police are the public and the public are the police", still underpins policing by consent: officers have powers, but they depend on the trust of the people they serve.
Role
Police officers gather evidence, interview witnesses and suspects, and can arrest people suspected of a crime. The Service is operationally independent: the Commissioner, not ministers, decides who is investigated. The Home Secretary sets the overall policy and answers for policing in Parliament. The Service publishes its notices in its own channel.
Positions
In UKOGB the Police Service is run by members who hold its posts on the website. Its head is the Commissioner of Police, who can edit the organisation's page, appoint people to its other roles and speak for it in public. The current holders are shown in the box on this page and on the organisation's page on the website, and each post brings its own Discord roles and website permissions.
