The Green Party is a left-wing environmentalist political party in UKOGB. It campaigns for urgent action on climate change, protection of the natural world, public ownership of essential services and greater social and economic equality.
Contents
History
The party traces its roots to 1973, when a small group founded PEOPLE, one of the first environmental parties in Europe. It became the Ecology Party and then, in 1985, the Green Party. In UKOGB it won its first seat in the House of Commons at the 2022 general election.
Beliefs
The Greens argue that the economy should serve people and the planet rather than growth for its own sake. They call for a rapid move to renewable energy, better public transport, a fairer tax system, stronger workers' rights and a more democratic voting system.
Organisation
The party is registered with the Electoral Commission, which publishes its donations, and its members choose its leaders.
