Oliver Howard is a British politician who served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 2022. He was the Leader of the Labour Party from 2020 and the Member of Parliament for Cities of London and Westminster since 2017.

Early life

Oliver Howard was born on 14 March 1975, in Sheffield, England, to a family of steelworkers. His father, Ken Howard, was a union shop steward, and his mother, Margaret (née Hopkins), was a ward sister at the Northern General Hospital. His grandfather, Arthur Hopkins, worked on the furnaces for 40 years and ran a works savings club. Oliver's early life was influenced by his family's experiences in the steel industry, particularly when his father was laid off at the age of 47. This event had a profound impact on Oliver, who decided to become a lawyer to help people like his father.

Law career

Oliver Howard read law at the University of Leeds and graduated with a First in 1996. He trained at a large City firm in London and qualified as a solicitor in 1999. However, he soon became disillusioned with defending companies against workers' rights claims and left to found Howard & Partners, an employment and workers' rights practice in Clerkenwell, in 2004. The firm took on cases such as unfair dismissal, unpaid wages, and workplace injury, often on no-win, no-fee terms. Oliver's notable cases include the Don Valley Pensions case, which he won in 2012, securing 90% of the owed pensions for over 400 former Sheffield steelworkers.

Hopkins PLC

In 2010, Oliver founded Hopkins PLC, an investment bank named after his grandfather, with the goal of raising capital for manufacturers, engineering firms, and infrastructure in the North. The company is registered with the Financial Conduct Authority and listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2016. Hopkins PLC employs around 900 people in Sheffield, Leeds, and the City of London, and its core principle is to only back projects that create tangible products.

Road to Number 10

Oliver Howard was a Labour Party member for 26 years before he stood for Parliament. He was elected as the Member of Parliament for Cities of London and Westminster in 2017, despite being told that a Labour lawyer from Sheffield could not win in the constituency. He became the Leader of the Labour Party in 2020 and was appointed a Knight Companion of the Order of the Garter in 2021 for his outstanding public service, particularly in the field of workers' rights. He led the Labour Party to victory in the 2022 general election and became the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on 6 May 2022.

Personal life and character

Oliver Howard is single and has no children. He is known for his calm and precise demeanor, as well as his dry sense of humor. He is a hard worker and is often up at 5:30 am to read briefs and make his own tea. He is driven by a desire to promote fairness at work and believes that nobody should face a powerful employer, landlord, or state alone. In his free time, he enjoys fell walking in the Peak District, cooking Sunday roasts for his staff, and supporting Sheffield Wednesday football club.
