The Cabinet of the United Kingdom is the senior decision-making body of HM Government. It is chaired by the Prime Minister and made up of the secretaries of state who lead the main government departments, together with a few other senior ministers.
Role
The Cabinet decides the government's most important questions and settles disagreements between departments. Its discussions are private, but its decisions bind every minister: under the doctrine of collective responsibility, all members must support the Cabinet's decisions in public, and a minister who cannot do so is expected to resign.
The Cabinet traditionally meets once a week in the Cabinet Room at 10 Downing Street, supported by the Cabinet Office. Much of its detailed work is done in smaller committees of ministers.
Members
The members of the Cabinet are appointed by The Sovereign on the advice of the Prime Minister, who can reshuffle them at any time. The Cabinet is made up of:
- the Prime Minister
- the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster
- the Chancellor of the Exchequer
- the Home Secretary
- the Foreign Secretary
- the Secretary of State for Defence
- the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice
- the Secretary of State for Education
- the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care
- the Secretary of State for Transport
- the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero
- the Secretary of State for Business and Trade
On the UKOGB website the Prime Minister appoints and removes Cabinet members, and each member gets the Cabinet and HM Government roles in the Discord server. The Cabinet is shadowed by the Shadow Cabinet of HM Opposition.
