His Majesty's Most Loyal Opposition, usually called HM Opposition or simply the Opposition, is the largest party in the House of Commons that is not in government. It is led by the Leader of the Opposition, who appoints the Shadow Cabinet. Since 2022 the Opposition has been formed by the Conservative Party.

History

The phrase "His Majesty's Opposition" was first used in the House of Commons in the 1820s, and captures an important idea: that opposing the government is a loyal and necessary part of the constitution, not disloyalty to the country. The Opposition is given time in the Commons to choose the subjects of debate, and its leader is paid in recognition of the role.

Role

The Opposition scrutinises everything the government does, challenges its bills and spending, and offers voters a government in waiting. Its leader questions the Prime Minister every week, and its shadow ministers mark each member of the Cabinet. In UKOGB, members of the Opposition front bench get the HM Opposition role in the Discord server and post in the Opposition's own announcements channel.

Positions

In UKOGB HM Opposition is run by members who hold its posts on the website. Its head is the Leader of the Opposition, who can edit the organisation's page, appoint people to its other roles and speak for it in public. The current holders are shown in the box on this page and on the organisation's page on the website, and each post brings its own Discord roles and website permissions.
