The Shadow Cabinet is the team of senior spokespeople chosen by the Leader of the Opposition to lead HM Opposition's work in Parliament. Each member shadows a member of the Cabinet, holding them to account and setting out what the Opposition would do in their place.
Role
Shadow ministers question their opposite numbers in the House of Commons, respond on the Opposition's behalf to government statements, lead debates on bills in their area and develop the policies the Opposition will put to voters at the next election. Like the Cabinet, the Shadow Cabinet usually works under collective responsibility.
If the Opposition wins a general election, the members of the Shadow Cabinet are likely to become the ministers of the new government.
