His Majesty's Government (HM Government) is the central government of the United Kingdom in UKOGB. It is led by the Prime Minister and the Cabinet, acts in the name of The Sovereign, and is formed by the party or coalition that commands the confidence of the House of Commons. Since 6 May 2022 the government has been formed by the Labour Party under Sir Oliver Howard.
History
The government is not elected directly. Voters elect the House of Commons, and the government is formed from it: the leader of the largest party is asked by the Sovereign to form a government, and chooses ministers from among the members of both Houses of Parliament. The government stays in office only for as long as it keeps the confidence of the Commons.
Role
The government runs the country day to day through its departments, each led by a secretary of state who sits in the Cabinet:
- Cabinet Office
- HM Treasury
- Home Office
- Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office
- Ministry of Defence
- Ministry of Justice
- Department for Education
- Department of Health and Social Care
- Department for Transport
- Department for Energy Security and Net Zero
- Department for Business and Trade
- HM Revenue and Customs, which collects taxes
Ministers answer to Parliament for everything the government does. In UKOGB, members of the government get the HM Government role in the Discord server, and the government posts its announcements in the government announcements channel.
